Card security code

One of the reasons your Barclaycard is so useful is because it’s a great way to pay for things over the phone, by mail order or online. However, this has opened up a whole new range of possibilities for the fraudsters, so we’ve added some new ways to stop them.

How do I prove it’s me that’s using my card?

As an extra way to prove your identity when you’re not there in person, you’ll be asked for:

  • Card Security Code
  • Verified by Visa password, if you’re registered (only available with a Visa card).

What is the Card Security Code?

Every Barclaycard has an extra piece of information – the Card Security Code. This is a number on the back of your card that doesn’t appear on receipts of your transactions, so only someone who actually has the card could know it.

How does it work?

On the back of your Barclaycard, you’ll see a row of digits printed just above the signature strip. The last three digits are your Card Security Code.

  • When you’re buying something over the phone, by mail order or online, you’ll be asked for your Card Security Code
  • Sometimes, we’ll ask for your Card Security Code when you call us on the phone
  • Your Card Security Code and your PIN are very different – you can’t use the Card Security Code at cash machines, or when you’re paying for something in person
  • Don’t give your Card Security Code to anyone but a genuine retailer, or to us if you call us.

What is Verified by Visa?

Verified by Visa is a free, simple-to-use service for all Visa cards. It confirms your identity with an extra password when you make an online transaction. It’s specifically designed to make online shopping more secure.

How do I use Verified by Visa?

First, activate your Visa card. Then, whenever you submit an order at a participating online store, a Verified by Visa window will appear automatically. Enter your password, click submit, and that's it. Once your card has been activated, it can’t be used without your personal password for online purchases.

Can I use Verified by Visa with any Visa card I have now?

Yes, Verified by Visa is designed to protect the Visa card, or cards, that you already have - whether they are credit cards or debit cards.
